We would like to invite you to get involved in our fundraising campaign.
We could really use your help in rehabilitating and extending “Prof Dr. George I.M. Georgescu” Cardiovascular Institute (50 Carol I Bvd., 700503, Iasi, Romania), a tertiary referral hospital offering cardiovascular care services (cardiology, interventional cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, electrophysiology) for 5.5 million inhabitants from 8 counties in the North-East region of Romania.
The night between the 10th and the 11th of April 2018, immediately after midnight, a fire started at the 6th floor in the sterilization compartment. The fire rapidly extended to all the 6th floor. A storage space, the entire sterilization compartment, two operating rooms and the Coronary Intensive Care Unit (floors 4, 5 and 6) were destroyed both by the fire and firefighters’ intervention (flooding). After the disaster, all surgical emergencies and all the patients scheduled for a surgical intervention in the next 3 months were redirected to other hospitals.
In Romania, only 4 public hospitals are able to perform cardiac surgery interventions and they are overcharged, with 90-120 days waiting lists. Except long waiting lists and transportation costs, all other public hospitals are located 181-702 km distance to major cities in North-East Romania.
The Cardiovascular Institute has played a significant role in pioneering many innovative cardiac therapies in Romania, such as coronary artery bypass grafting (both on-pump and off-pump – 230/year), valve surgery (both conventional and minimally invasive – 220/year), paediatric cardiac surgery (80/year), catheter-based valve replacement procedures (30/year), endovascular aortic repair (20/year).
The range of services offered by the Cardiovascular Institute encompasses diagnostics and therapies for all diseases of the cardiovascular system. The Institute shares a two corps 6-floors building with another hospital namely the “Dr. C.I. Parhon” Clinical Hospital, each occupying half of the facility. One corp was built in 1943 as the most modern hospital of the country and the second in 1987, more than 30 years ago.
Today, over 400 employees work at the Institute under the guidance of experienced physicians and renowned scientists providing pre-admission, in-patient and out-patient care for nearly 32,000 patients each year (approximately 1000 surgical interventions).
Nowadays, after the devastating fire, there is a need for an extended Institute that keeps up with today’s state-of-the-art technology being designed to enable the latest advances in clinical and surgical procedures, optimal patient safety and infection control, and best practices in cardiovascular care.
